NAC renal indication

We know that "prophylactic oral administration of acetylcysteine, along with hydration, is used to prevent the reduction in renal function induced by (specifically) iopromide (radiographic contrast agent), in patients with chronic renal insufficiency. (N Engl J Med 2000;343:180-4.)"
However, is anyone aware of whether NAC can be used longterm and generally to slow the rate of chronic renal failure?
