Anything new out there with NAC being used for Pulmonary Fibrosis or any scaring in the lungs?

Would like to hear about experience of members using Acetylcysteine in Diffuse Pulmonary Fibrosis or Interstitial Lung Disease. Along with Steroids and or other meds.

Started using NAC three months ago, 3 ml three times a day (20% solution) for IPF. Breathing test baseline December 12, 2005. Followup breathing test March 12 showed 13 percent increase in diffusion rate, from 25 percent to 38 percent, and a doubling of vital capacity. Sorry, the doctor spoke in terms of how many ccs in December compared to March 12 and I Don't remember the numbers. Significant difference in how I look, and feel. Scheduled to take another test June 26; will stay on NAC until then at same dosage. I believe this is significant.

Anyone using NAC for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis?

5 mariannebon   2008-06-23 12:34

These are old posts but I'll add that yes - I use this in my nebulizer 3 times a day. I've done this since Dec of 2005. Five years ago they told me I probably wouldn't live for 5 years but here I am and my fibrosis has been almost stable.

I started taking acetylcysteine for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, orally on Oct. 23, 2009. In about one month time it is too early to tell if I have had any improvement in breathing, but I plan to continue taking it. If anyone out there has any pro/con stories about taking this medication I would be interested in your comments. Thanks, Terry

I have been diagnosed with dyspnea and Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and am on supplementary O2. I also have RA. PREDNISONE along with NAC was prescribed. The very first dose of 20mg pred and 600mg nac made a new man out of me. I have no joint pains, no inflammation. I have become energetic and am in a positive frame of mind. My breathing seems to have improved. I exercise 90 mins a day. I am 72 but feel a lot younger. It has been two months now and my condition is stable.

My blood sats have improved even after exertion, and become normal within a minute.
